Taronga Zoo -
Sculptural Timber Seating
At Taronga Zoo, we collaborated on the delivery of a distinctive custom-built outdoor seating installation that blends functionality with natural form. The design brief called for a large-scale timber bench structure that curved organically through the landscape, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding trees and environment.
BAMS was engaged to manufacture and install the sculptural bench, which was fabricated using rich, durable hardwood battens fixed to a custom steel sub-frame. Each batten was individually cut and profiled to achieve the dynamic wave-like silhouette that rises and falls along the length of the seat. This meticulous process allowed the seating to flow fluidly, creating a cohesive architectural feature that also offers generous public seating.
The undulating curves and integrated backrest not only provide comfort and visual interest but also echo the zoo’s commitment to celebrating nature through design. The seating wraps around pathways and gardens, adding warmth and texture to the space, and providing visitors with a resting point within the zoo’s natural bushland setting.
This project exemplifies our capabilities in translating ambitious designs into high-quality, buildable solutions—especially when working with organic shapes and challenging geometries.
